The Ghats of Banaras Wire Art Wall Frame is a handcrafted 3D wall art piece inspired by the iconic riverfront of Varanasi. Salvaged coloured electrical wires from discarded chargers and other e-waste are sorted, cut, coiled, and shaped by artisans into temple spires, ghats, boats, and trees. Layered onto a hand-painted wooden base and set within a frame crafted from reclaimed wood sourced from Indian railways, each piece transforms rescued materials into a distinctive keepsake of Banaras.
Wires the City Left Behind, Coiled Into the City They Now Depict
Varanasi lives through its ghats, temple bells at sunrise, boats moving across the Ganga, and stone steps carrying centuries of stories. Like every growing city, it also generates electronic waste.
Scrapshala reimagines salvaged coloured electrical wires as an artistic material. Wire by wire, artisans shape architectural details and everyday scenes from the ghats, creating a raised composition against a hand-painted sky and river. What once carried electricity now carries the story of one of the world’s oldest living cities.
Meet the Maker
Crafted by Scrapshala’s artisan Anil Kumar Patel and Founder Shikha Shah in Varanasi, each frame involves skilled wire shaping, painting, composition, framing, and finishing. The handmade process means subtle variations in coils, forms, wood grain, and brushwork make every piece unique.
From Discarded Wire to Wall Art
The process begins with collecting and sorting salvaged electrical wires by colour. Each wire is cut, hand-coiled, and shaped into temples, steps, boats, and trees. The wooden background is hand-painted to evoke the Ganga and Banaras skyline before the wirework is layered and assembled. Reclaimed wood from discarded railway pallets is prepared and crafted into the outer frame. The finished artwork is quality-checked and packed for dispatch.
